It’s been quite a busy season in politics recently. Canada recently had an election, and the United States are about to have one next week. Although it is very easy to be cynical about politics for obvious reasons, I tend to focus on the silver lining, which is motivating speeches that can move an entire nation. Politicians are extremely skilled in the art of motivation and pulling at the emotions of their audience. I wanted to take this opportunity to give you my top 10 political speeches of the past century:

Martin Luther King, Jr. – I Have A Dream

John F. Kennedy – Inaugural Address

Franklin D. Roosevelt – 1st Inaugual Address

Malcolm X – The Ballot or The Bullet

Franklin D. Roosevelt – Pearl Harbor Address

Richard M. Nixon – Checkers

Ronald W. Reagan – Challenger Disaster Address

Martin Luther King, Jr. – I’ve Been To The Mountaintop

Dwight D. Eisenhower – Farewell Address

John F. Kennedy – Ich Bin Ein Berliner

  3. Well, guess what, there are other countries that speak English (including the country that invented the language!) Those listed are inspiring speeches certainly but do you see now why so many other nations get their hackles up at US ethnocentricity?

  4. Very interesting speeches. Yes they are all American but they’re your top 10, Frederic, so fair enough.

  5. Well, this definitely should be renames best American political speeches. Churchill, Gandhi and a whole bunch of other people gave speeches in English. The rest of the world speaks english as well. And they are on Youtube, so I’m pretty sure they could be linked. And I have to agree with Neil. Adolf Hitler might have been a mass murdering tard. However, his speeches are said to be the most effective and best speeches recorded by humans. We’re not praising the guy, Fredric. We’re just saying that his speech’s did what they were supposed to do.

However, I must say that these speeches are pretty damn good.

    Cheers

  7. Yeah, let’s praise a man who killed millions of people for his speaking abilities, that sounds like a great idea….

There is a world outside of the USA of course, but I can’t post speeches in other languages that 90% of readers won’t understand (if they are even available online).

    cheers

  10. Hi Greg,

very good point! I also wanted to include A Time of Choosing by Reagan, but this farewell address seems to be very inspiring as well. Looks like Reagan gave many memorable speeches!

  11. Oh,
You have missed the best political speach of the 20th century.
Ronald W. Reagan – Farewell Address

We’ve done our part. And as I walk off into the city streets, a final word to the men and women of the Reagan revolution, the men and women across America who for 8 years did the work that brought America back. My friends: We did it. We weren’t just marking time. We made a difference. We made the city stronger, we made the city freer, and we left her in good hands. All in all, not bad, not bad at all.

And so, goodbye, God bless you, and God bless the United States of America.
