Have you ever driven anywhere and arrived with no conscious memory of the journey? Been so absorbed in a TV show that you didn’t notice somebody talking to you? Or even just found yourself staring out of the window, lost in a daydream? Then you’ve experienced something very much like hypnosis!

This naturally occurring state of mind is a very focused state of attention. It can be an external focus, in the case of that fascinating TV show, or an internal one, such as a daydream.

Hypnosis also refers to the methods used to deliberately produce those states of mind. When we’re in them, our conscious, thinking mind takes a back seat, and the unconscious mind becomes more readily available. We’re then in a better position to learn new things, or we can simply give our overstretched thinking brains a much needed break.

So what are the benefits of hypnosis?

Housekeeping For The Mind and Body

Hypnosis is a deeply relaxing state, and the benefits of this are almost too many to list. Like shutting down unwanted programs that have been left running on your computer, it clears away mental clutter, allowing us to think and function more clearly. It also reduces stress, increases energy, boosts the immune system and helps us to heal more efficiently.

Eliminate The Negative

People commonly visit hypnotists or hypnotherapists to get rid of unwanted habits – smoking, nail biting, comfort eating and so on. Hypnosis is effective, because it deals directly with part of the mind that’s kept the habit in place – the unconscious.

Accentuate The Positive

Hypnosis is a way of refining and strengthening useful habits or behaviors. If you’re a golfer, for example, then using the hypnotic state to perfect your golf swing will noticeably improve your game in the real world.

Mental Dress Rehearsal

In a similar way, the hypnotic state can be used to rehearse success in future events. If you’ve got a presentation to the board coming up, hypnotically rehearse it going smoothly. When the big day comes, the unconscious mind – which sees no difference between real and imagined events – will recognize it as a situation in which you feel calm, assured and eloquent.
