I have known some very jealous personalities in my life. To be perfectly honest, I can’t think of any one of them that ended up being truly happy or successful. Jealousy has a way of destroying everything in front of it without regards. I can freely admit that I am not a jealous person, and I feel that it has a lot to do with the fact that I concentrate more on what I do than what others do. I believe that I could be a jealous person if I wouldn’t have this control over myself. After all, I am a very competitive person that thrives on adversity. I would seem to be the perfect fit to have jealous tendencies, yet I do not. Here are some tips that I live by which I believe can make a significant difference in controlling your jealousy:

Focus on your qualities
I spend more time thinking about what I do right than what I do wrong. We all have our faults, sure. But why should we be reminded of them constantly? I am a very positive person, I will look at the glass as half full. I do not see problems, I see opportunities. I feel that being positive and always looking at the silver lining helps tremendously in avoiding feelings of jealousy. Jealousy thrives on negative emotions, so take the negativity out of the equation and your jealousy can barely survive. You are the best positioned person to know what you are doing right. You are therefore the best person to remind yourself of all that is positive about you. Do not count on others to do that for you, because you cannot be guaranteed it will always be the case. If I do think of a fault of mine, I think of it in terms of what I can do to improve it. I never dwell on anything negative about me, I feel that is a big waste of time, and a trap to affect other emotions, such as jealousy in this case.

Do not compare yourself
One of the main reasons why people feel jealousy, is that they compare themselves to other people and what they have. We are all completely unique individuals, and once you fully understand this concept, you will realize that comparison among each other is useless. We all have things that others don’t have and vice versa. The combination of what we have and what we do not have is unique. Now, you can aspire to have something or have a certain characteristic like someone else. That is usually a positive feeling, which triggers motion and improvement. Jealousy triggers paralysis, and that is the difference. You cannot be someone else, you are “you”, so focus on being the best “you” that you can possibly be!

Remind yourself of the consequences
What good has ever come out of being jealous? I can think of only one and I will discuss it in my last point. But usually, jealousy only leaves a trail of hurt and disappointment. Why allow yourself to feel this way if you know nothing good can come out of it? This is about being in control of your own mind. I know that jealousy is a hard emotion to control. This is why you need to remind yourself of all the potential bad things that can result from expressing this jealousy. You are not only bringing yourself down by being jealous, but chances are, you are affecting other people as well. Do you really want to be the root of such a negative experience to the people around you? Think about the consequences as soon as your jealousy grows so that you can more easily tame it.

Assess your lifestyle
A friend of mine once told me that his jealous ways completely disappeared once he changed his eating habits into a healthier direction. I found this quite fascinating. Take a closer look at your way of life. Perhaps the source of your jealous ways lies in the fact that you do not have a proper diet, do not exercise enough, or do not have a constructive hobby. Lacking in these areas can have serious effects on your psyche. Doing activities that make you happy & feel good will only boost my first point about focusing on what’s good about you. If you are moping around your home, eating junk food, and feeling sorry about yourself, chances are your potential for being a jealous person will be much higher.

Channel your jealousy into motivation

Instead of letting the jealousy eat you up, think about what you can do about it. Do not linger endlessly into the feelings of jealousy, it will drive you mad and irrational. Concentrate on a constructive way to direct the energy that you are expressing due to this jealous emotion into something that you can benefit from. Allow jealousy to motivate you into being an even better person than you are. Let it push you to improve yourself. Instead of letting jealousy destroy you, you turn it around and make it work for you. You will soon realize that jealousy will turn into aspirations, which can then be to your advantage. Channeling your jealousy into something that can motivate you to change, improve, or grow is a wonderful way to gain control over jealousy and make it work for you.

I have seen so many people lose so much because of letting their jealousy get out of control. I hope this article can help others in such a position to gain control back over this combustible emotion so that they do not suffer the same fate.

How do you usually cope with jealousy?

  1. Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have an amazingly talented girlfriend, and once in a while I come to feel extremely down on myself, jealous of her endless talents, hobbies, and passions. It’s especially hard to control jealousy and not compare yourself when the other person is your girlfriend! I try telling myself to instead be proud of having a talented girlfriend, but even then the feeling still lingers inside.
But this article has opened my eyes to something I already knew – my lifestyle needs a change. I sit at home, watching YouTube videos all day and playing games, while she’s sewing or gardening or practicing piano or reading a book or decorating for Christmas or making an amazing craft – the list goes on and on! I need to do something more productive with my life!!!
Hopefully this way I’ll be able to be content with my skills and abilities while also being grateful for my girlfriend’s many talents. 🙂

  4. While some of the article seems nice and somewhat well spoken, I found it kind of shallow. Like for example,
“I spend more time thinking about what I do right than what I do wrong. We all have our faults, sure.”.

It seems in life when you focus on the I, I, I, word you kind of set yourself up for jealousy in that “I” is a Pride operative. Maybe if one said “Let me look inside myself find the beauty of who I can be, the promise that I will be, the music that I can make with others as we all traverse existence together”, maybe the better call. Find a way to look at jealous feelings from the outside is normally a better aid.

Looking around, it seems that the finger is pointed at jealousy is a couples thing but really its not. Just kind of wish that there is a deeper discourse of this subject.

  6. I have been jealous my whole life of other girls. Comparing myself to them, and making myself feel low for no reason.

It’s one thing to be jealous of girls who aren’t your friends. Eventually, after not seeing them awhile, you forget.

But I am jealous of one of my best friends, who is very pretty, has bigger boobs that guys gawk at at the clubs, as well as a friendly attitude.

When she goes into the club, at times I feel invisible. Guys who might talk to me that first would stray to her, just like I imagined it would be like.

I never was like this, sure, I would notice someone was good looking, but I would have fun no matter what, and I would attract a bunch of people myself.

Now I just feel like I have lowest self-esteem and no confidence. Worse, I feel like I am betraying a good friend by wishing it was the opposite.

I really hope I can have a healthy mentality and not be so competitive. And not take every rejection so seriously. I wish I know my own worth one day.

I have low self-esteem n i put my self down alot n i have a problem to compare my self to other girls that I think my bf would like. But I honestly want to stop been jealous for good and focus more on my confidence and feel good about my self.

  9. I’ve definitely had my struggles with jealousy. I do think it’s rooted in low self worth. I also think it’s a natural human emotion that people have to cope with from time to time. Feeling jealous from time to time, and letting jealousy run your life are two different things. It’s not something you’d want to sweep under the rug.

  10. My jealousy is something that I’ve had a problem with for years. It’s my self-esteem that’s a big issue, not having the prettiest smile puts a lot of things on pause for me. I’m twenty six years old, and have never had a study job, besides housecleaning because I’m so afraid of getting rejected. I’m tired of the feeling of never being able to achieve, I want it more than anything. Over the past few days, I’ve tried to build confidence, but coming across this article has helped so much. I won’t allow my fears to hold me back from getting a job and moving away to start a life. I won’t allow myself to feel less attractive than the other girl.

Thank you for posting this. Tho my jealous is not ruining others around me, it’s ruining me. But as of now, no more of the negative will stand in my way.

  17. Jealousy, a word I struggle to spell let alone come to understand.

For me, I was always jealous but never really knew why or what was happening. Different feelings would swirl up inside and I would often sob like a baby into tissues on the floor feeling very sorry for myself.

I knew I was a good person, I cared for myself, other people and generally wanted the best for everyone. I just couldn’t seem to handle my boyfriend talking to other girls or doing things without me. I began to feel quite possessive and noticed how controlling I was. I also did not like being this person, deep inside it felt wrong to be so controlling and demanding.

I started to ask myself questions about why was I like this, I wasn’t born like it! how had I got to this place. I then began to understand about thought patterns and how people can easily get stuck in a learnt behaviour which can impact on their relationships. I had noticed also that I was jealous of my older sister and sometimes her relationship with mum, I felt left out and not good enough.

The useful tips I found for jealousy are:

It’s not really jealousy, it’s about your insecurities which happened along the way. When you start looking into them, you see why you have become jealous or insecure.

Try not to take things personally, attention is something we all love and get a lot from but when it’s not there we can feel low and look to fill the gap. I try to allow that sometimes I will receive it and it’s nice but also the times I’m not receiving it, that’s nice too.

    I hope this helps

  23. I realized after four years of being with a man with extreme jealousy problems that it will never get better. He put very little effort into getting help. Did attempt to see a therapist the first year and barely tried medication to control his thoughts. I just finally gave up and accepted that he has done this his whole life in relationships. Claimed I was the love of his life and that I brought it out in him because he loved me so much. Yeah loved me so much to put me through hell and back. I was bitter for awhile, clearly he was not stable to pursue me when he first met me. I should of told him to take a hike from the beginning. Believe me he was very suave and used the old tried and true technique that he knows can get a woman. A total fraud. Fake facade to bring me in pretending to be the utmost stable and sincere caring man ever. All lies and fabrications. He will keep doing this over and over. The thought of him makes my stomach turn. I finally fell out of love with him and left. When I think of him, I feel nothing. Eventually if your stuck in a relationship with someone who is extremely jealous, give it time and u will lose all feelings of love. I am amazed how I was at one time totally in love with this man and now I have no feelings of any kind left for him. I was able to walk away without shedding a tear. We had been through countless break ups. I actually am excited that I’m finally free! Just remember they have been fake from day one and every loving word or gesture was not genuine. It’s to feed their insecurities.

  27. You people really need to brush up on your grammar. That is beside the point though. This is a short and sweet article that appears to have the essentials to overcoming jealousy. I am going to try and put them into practice and hopefully rid my own relationship of jealous poison. Provided here are excellent ways to deal with jealousy on the whole but I am still wondering how to deal with a sudden onset of jealousy. Say a cute female friend is flirting with your boyfriend and it appears to be quite harmless. A sudden and intense feeling of jealousy washes over you but you don’t want to do anything irrational. You know your bf will think you are being crazy or controlling if you take him aside and tell him he is being inappropriate, especially when you have exerted jealous tendencies in the past. What then?

  28. Hi

Thank you so much for this input

You know I know I am not jealous of any one but I do want to be a perfect person but in my own space without checking what one has and not.

But I find it difficult to understand people who are jealousy of others again I ma saying I am not a jealous person I have my parents to thank and also the backgraound I as brought and also associated then but when you grom you meet certain individuals and they compare that and that, yes it does happen even to me to compare what one has but really I always check on my own like and don’ts because I know that I am a very sensitive person though I am trying to work out on that sensitivity because I kow it gets to some people around me very seriously but it’s me hey(working on that)

Jealousy is so destroying everything, You know I had this particular lady whom I used to admire and like so much but I have found out and also realise that she lately does not like me and she really compares what ever I have or try to have what ever I want, so I have decided to distance myself from her though I really do not like it because I still like her

    Thanks

  31. I am a very jealous person and it completely has taken over my life. Mainly I am jealous of this one girl I grew up with/went to school with. She was always the popular one etc. I moved away from that small town and years later I found out this girl married the most popular boy in our grade. Of course the boy I always thought was so handsome (and still do til this day)! So now they are married and expecting twin boys and it makes me absolutely sick. I can barely control my irrational feelings about hating this girl so much for getting everything she wants! I have been trying to control my feelings, I block her on FB so I don’t have to see her updates but then I end up unblocking her and upsetting myself when I see pictures or read her updates. My jealousy has paralyzed me into living my life. Most of my dreams are even consumed by this couple. I can’t help but wish I was her and married to this guy, who seems to be absolutely head over heels for her after 15 yrs of being together! I guess deep down I want so badly to have what she has, to be in love to a handsome guy who loves me the same and to be pregnant with a baby let alone twin boys, jeez! I can’t help but feel hate for these two, they get everything they want and don’t seem to have one struggle in the world. They are also so obnoxious with their status updates and the way they talk. He acts like he is so cool and it annoys me. 🙁
    Hopelessly, dealing with my jealousy….

I love my Gf she’s amazing and treat’s me right and i know she does love me she proves it too me all the time, but there’s always a feeling that other guys will come along and take her from me. She has a lot of guy friends which can add on to it in a way but it doesn’t bother me to the point where i can’t stand it, just that all these guy’s find her attractive or want to get with her and i get so angry and frustrated and it’s so stressful and i wish i could just blow it off. I’m afraid it’ll eventually get so worse she won’t be able to handle it and leave and i couldn’t handle it. I get paranoid as well like she’s doing stuff behind my back even though i know she isn’t but it lingers over my head sometimes and i need too learn to control that also, i do trust her though. But this did help me a lot, thank you so much!

If your relationship is based on lies, you need to get out. I don’t know. Maybe there’s someone out there for you. I’m a very jealous person because I have my own insecurity and I hate it. This article can help me to find good qualities witinin myself. However, I think it will take time and practice to cool down. My b/f said I am a very beautiful and successful person. However, I am jealous of all girls because I am like 10,000 miles from him. I’m afraid one day, he might be lonely and start dating a new girl who lives next door. It might happen, right? I am here in Asia and he is in NY state. I know I need to find a new guy but he is really nice and he takes a good care of me when I was in NY. Right now, I will just try not to be jealous and try to focus on my good qualities.

  56. Thank you so much,
This article has really cool me down. I have been jealous and have been thinking of something that made me jealous, and that thought might even not exist or not even true.
I would love to copy this article down and store this in my phone, as a reminder, and would love to read this always, and be a good example..
THe feeling of jealousy is…..as we can see all the comments,…everyone hates it!!! so do i…..
thanks again, though this might not be the perfect antidote to jealousy, but at least a correct path to control ourselves and live a better life 😀

    Cheers

  57. I definitely like my own husband sooo much and furthermore he is actually fabulous for me. I really like every little thing that is related to him. The only problem though, is he is friends with too many ladies and I can’t stand realizing that he’s speaking with a variety of girls as an alternative to me. I hate being jealous. I’m trying to just ignore the jealousy but I can’t. Please help me out. Thanks.

  58. I noticed something as well about this on another blog.Incredibly, your view on it’s diametrically opposite as to the I read previously. I am still trying to puzzle out over the conflicting points of view, but Im tipped heavily toward yours. As well as in any case, thats what is so outstanding about modern democracy and the marketplace of ideas onthe internet.

  61. Although this is great advice, it seems to be coming from the perspective of someone who doesn’t experience feeling jealous, so therefore does not know how incredibly hard it is to feel the strong, sometimes scary, and anxious emotions attached to jealousy.

These are quick fixes, but really I think the only way to truly get rid of jealousy is to do deeper and look at the root of where these emotions come from. I struggle with jealousy and feelings of not being good enough, and am incredibly cautious in my relationships. Yet no one would ever tell from how I interact with the world, I seem confident and happy almost all the time.

It’s never as simple as “I’m just going to choose not to be jealous” and if you expect yourself to just “get over it”, then you’re going to feel like a failure when you don’t do it as easily as you think you should. Jealousy comes from deep insecurity, a need for control, and a lack of trust. Add all the complex sexual and gender issues we face at the office, on tv, and in our own competitive world and it’s a recipe for disaster.

I think it’s a good start to give yourself a pep talk, but the real cure will come from digging down and really confronting some of where this stuff comes from. Absent dad who flirted with other women but ignored his daughter? Divorced parents where everything was chaotic at home? Dad who never showed his son any approval? All root causes of jealousy.

Good luck everyone. This isn’t easy, and be nice to yourself. Take a deep breath and let your mind wander to where you think the jealousy might stem from and take it from there. You might find some surprising answers.

  66. im the jealous , it took all my life , i wish i could kill my self just not hear that voice of mine judging me and comparing me with others …or with some people that i hated all my life becuz of the feeling they gave me, grew in years and now it's all my heart ! hatred !

thinking of somebody all the time and when u start to be reasonable u say “Whoa ! everybody is not supposed to be happy/beautiful/successful or what ever ! Now what !?” and the next time u cry about this sentence that u'd made to calm ur self down !

  69. Ei tnx, reading this article cheered me up about my situation with my boyfriend and made me realize that i'm the only one in control of myself. Now, i'm not gonna let jealousy control me and i'm sure that following these tips i'll gain back the happy relationship that i once had…i hate to behave with jealous and i'm ashamed of it because they DO NOT brng anything good, instead they get things worse and worse.
Even though i know its gonna be a little hard to get rid of this, i am possitive that i can do it bcuz my personality was not like this before and i'm becoming in something ridiculous and illogical!! Really, this article gave me hope and i'm glad that i have read it before a bad ending. tnx again for posting..!!

  76. Thank you for this article. I really needed to hear a simple yet accute approach such as this.
I know I have a problem, but there are not too many remedies out there to try and fix and or deal with it. This seems logical and hopefully, easy. Jealousy is a beat within me that I have a hard time controling but now I have some faith I may be able to calm it down if not get rid of it.

    Thank you, so much.

  81. I;m glad i read this post because most recently i have been fighting jealousy with this girl. We promised each other that if we hook up with someone we will tell each other but she has been seeing this guy and i know who he is and everytime she goes to see him my emotions run wild and the jealousy rages within me. Last night was my breaking point and I came down on her and every girl with raw, animal emotions. I need to learn to control my jealousy because i am turning into my ex who was exactly the same way. I refuse to become her and becuz of what i did i nearly lost a friend tho thankfully she forgave me. i dont know why i feel like this or anyone for that matter it is the animal instincts inside of us that make us feel this way. i truly hope that with time i can learn to control this deadly emotion and move on. Thanks for posting!

because if it’s something I dont have or own, maybe it’s something that I was supposed to have on that moment.

Even fortunate people can have unfortunate things..
thinking about the talents and good things you have will make you not feel jealous, if you ever feel jelaous think about the good things you have and see the negative things other have that you don’t…
