relax

Most people are living a hectic life in a hectic world today. Everything seems to be go, go, go. There is little time to stop and relax. This is stressful enough, but if you add an additional stress such as a mistake at work or your child getting in trouble at school; things can quickly spiral out of control. There are ways to get a handle on stress and relax a little during the day.

• Take a deep breath. Deep breathing exercises are one of the most relaxing things you can do. It centers you and brings you back into the moment. It is very hard to worry about something that happened in the past or be afraid of the future if you are living in the present moment.

• Tense and relax each muscle of your body starting with your forehead and work your way down to your toes. This will help you relax completely. If you combine this exercise with the breathing exercise you can even stop a panic attack in its tracks. This exercise can either be done sitting down or while lying down.

• Go for a walk. Regular exercise can relieve anxiety and help you keep your cool. Doing exercise will release endorphins, or feel good chemicals, that makes your feel more grounded and can even relieve pain. Going for a walk when you are upset gives you time to calm down as well. You should take time to enjoy the scenery around you. This will get your mind off of the things that are bothering you and give you a chance to relax.

• Have a cup of tea. Herbal tea is delicious and the warming feeling can take the edge off of even the worse day. Choose a tea that is caffeine free and has a flavor that you really enjoy such as blueberry or peppermint.
