willpower

I had the opportunity to read this unconventional book the other day.  The Skinny On series is a collection of books on various topics that can range from credit cards to online dating…yes, really!  What’s different about this collection is that they have come to a conclusion that I have to agree with when it comes to reading books: People simply do not have time nowadays to read 500+ pages.  Fifty years ago, it was fine.  Society was not as fast paced and there wasn’t the sheer abundance of information that we now possess.  So this collection is all about simplicity and getting to the point of things.  No need to read hundreds of pages to understand one concept.  You can understand it much faster in much simpler terms.  Yes, I like this concept very much I must say!

So they happen to have a Skinny book on the topic of willpower, and that is what I got my hands on.  Willpower is proportionally related to motivation and I have written extensively about this in some of my previous articles.  By the way, this series of books is called the Skinny On because it uses stick figures to create scenarios where you can visualize the concepts that they are teaching you.  Sort of like a very simplistic comic strip.

I thought they did a great job of getting to the nitty gritty of what constitutes willpower quickly and effectively.  They discussed how crucial goals are to willpower and how it is important to be specific and committed.  I liked how they mentioned that willpower is unique to each individual, as in that something that may work for one person, may not work for another.

The factor of inner motivation is discussed, where desire comes into hand.  Deep rooted personal motivation is far greater than any external motivation.  For example, a conviction that you are passionate about will push you much further than a sum of money ever will.

I liked that they mentioned that willpower is something that must be sustained.  If you are not motivated enough, your desire will eventually fade when you hit a rough patch.  Again, throughout the book the concepts are easily understood by the situations that the stick figures find themselves in.

I liked that they put a new spin on a few ideas, such as their discussion and definition of inertia and the importance of energy conservation when it comes to willpower.  I thought it was very logical and probably the easiest way I found it ever phrased.

The Skinny On Willpower definitely lives up to its promise.  You can easily read this book in about an hour.  Which means that you can read it cover to cover quite a few times and really get everything to sink in without wasting that much time on it.  I think it’s a fun book with smart concepts and for anyone living a busy lifestyle that needs a boost in desire, motivation, and willpower, this quick read can definitely be the picker upper that you are looking for!
