You wake up. You go to work. You come back home. You watch TV. You go to sleep. You wake up. You go to work. You come back home. You watch TV. You go to sleep. And it just keeps going day after day after day.
There must be more to life than this, right?
As we are stuck in the routine that is our so-called life, we often ponder this very question. Deep down inside of us, we know that this daily, never-ending routine isn’t what life is all about. That’s merely existing. You are just there, but you are not “there”.
Yes, there is more to life than this.
Here is how I know that life is more than this every day struggle to make ends meet. We are all here for a reason. Each and every one of us are here because we are meant to be here. If you were not meant to be here, then why would you be? You have a reason, a meaning, and a purpose to be who you are. There are no “accidents” in the Universe. Everything happens for a reason, including each and every single life here on Earth.
So how do we discover what we are actually here for?
It’s all in the direction that we take. Where you are going determines where you will end up. The question is, are you heading in the right direction? Clearly, if you are stuck in a daily routine that makes you ask yourself if life has more to offer than this, you are not going in the right direction! You see, we all tend to pursue & seek things that we do not fully comprehend what to do with once we have it. For example, what’s one thing that most people in this world want? Money, right? Everyone wants money, yet very few people actually know what to do with it. Do you want more money to satisfy your own insatiable thirst for more material, or do you actually want to do something more powerful and more meaningful with that money?
You do not succeed to quench the enormous thirst that your ego requires
The select few that actually reach a pinnacle of success within their lives do not reach it merely for the sake of having reached it. They arrive to this point because there is something greater in store for them. They have an opportunity to be a voice for those that do not have one. They have a chance to use their power & influence to turn the wrongs in this world into rights. Like I said, nothing happens for no reason….it’s all about what direction you take.
It is not about getting more, and this is the veil that most people can’t see through. You are not what you have gathered. You are not your valuables. Your value is not determined by how many valuables you have. Haven’t we seen people that seemingly have it all only to be rotten, unhappy individuals to understand that we are not here to amass as much material as possible. Our purpose to be here is greater than this charade.
We are here to help one another
Why do you think that you get this fuzzy warm feeling when you help out someone else? Do you get that same feeling when you drive around in a new car or when you watch a new big screen TV? My guess is, not likely! This is because such materialism is meaningless. You could be sitting in front of a small black & white TV, the result would be the same. It brings no value to this world. However, serving others and doing good deeds directly impacts the world that you live in. This is why you get that “feel good” sensation. That’s your body telling you that you did something right. This brings tremendous value that which cannot be stamped with a price tag.
The other day I was watching this documentary on ants. It was saying how all ants in a colony work together cohesively. They all know their roles and nobody steps on each other’s toes. Together, they are a perfectly functioning organism. This is what we should aim for as human beings. We need to work together, instead of against each other, and this can only happen by allowing yourself to help & serve others and to put the never ending demands of your ego aside.
So how do we accomplish this?
You do this by simply being who you are. We all have our set of talent, background, opportunities, ideas, creativity, and the likes. This makes us who we are. Simply do what you were meant to do. This is how you will realize the potential of your life’s true purpose…by doing what you were meant to be doing.
For example, if you are 7 feet tall and can dunk a basketball, maybe your life’s purpose is to be a basketball player. If you can sing well, then maybe you should be a singer. If you are good in math, then maybe you should be a mathematician. Each and everyone of us have a particular skill set in which we not only excel at, but that we actually enjoy using. I have a friend that is a highly gifted painter. Her work is just astounding. She is studying to be an accountant because she wants to make as much money as possible. Is she doing what she was meant to be doing? Highly unlikely, and she may find herself like so many people find themselves years later, once you snap out of this daily routine, that you are not doing what you were meant to be doing. This of course, creates a lack of happiness which then resonates in all areas of your life. This seeking of more money and more material blinds us from what we should truly be doing, and this is why I emphasized this earlier. It is blocking you from being who you should truly be.
Use the abilities you have been given
One great example I can think of is Stephen Hawkins. Although completely incapacitated physically due to Lou Gehrig’s disease, he has masterfully used what he was given, his mind, to help answer some of science’s most intriguing questions. Look at the impact on society that he has had. He’s brought value by simply doing what he was wired to do, and this is what the purpose of life is all about.
The ultimate goal in life, as simple as it may seem, is to simply be YOU.
