I watched this amazing BBC documentary last night on how in certain parts of the world, there are populations that defy the norm. They age more slowly, and live much healthier lives. There seems to be a variety of factors involved in this, and one of the most important aspect is food. While in western civilizations we yearn for more food all the time, one of the keys of such healthy longevity in Okinawa, Japan is their rule to “only eat until you are 80% full”. Instead of over indulging, you calm your hunger without feeling full. Also, the happiness and stress factors come into play as well. Imagine, living to over 100 years old and 97 of those years without health issues at all (that is the norm in Okinawa)! In any event, you should definitely watch this documentary below, it’s an insightful program, which may be an eye opener for many, in that perhaps we go about things backwards when it comes to our health and life expectancy:

  1. Yes, this one does discuss this as well…it’s an interesting point, along with the eating to be only 80% full and spreading out your meals into smaller ones more often throughout the day.

  3. I don’t think it was the same documentary but I saw a similar one about a year ago. The people only ate around 1000 calories each day and they often lived to be 100 years old and maintain pretty good health.

The science behind it as I remember was that by only eating 1000 calories a day the body enters a sort of stasis/survival mode where your body slows down so that it makes more efficient use of the calorie intake. This means less wear and tear, etc.

I don’t know personally if it is something I could do but it’s certainly very interesting.
