Summer is getting away from us fast. You really wanted to enjoy yourself this year, but it seems like you are always doing something other than relaxing and having fun. This was the year you were going to spend time doing the outdoor activities that you love while the weather is nice and you were going to devote more time to your kids while they were out of school. Unfortunately it is not working out that way after all. You can get more time for yourself before it is too late.
• Prioritize your life. If you have something that needs done that day and you are not looking forward to it; get it done first. Mark the things that you are dreading off of your to do list first. This will free up the rest of the day for things you want to do and give you a great sense of accomplishment.
• Schedule your time a week in advance. Mark your calendar with everything that you need to do for the week; work, appointments and schedule in the time for yourself. Treat the “me” time as an appointment that is just as important as the other appointments. Some people who specialize in time management suggest that you color code each type of entry into your calendar. Highlight appointments, work, family time and time for yourself in different colors. This will give you a visual of how much time you spend on your tasks.
• Learn to say no to obligations that you have no desire to fulfill. If you do not want to be on every committee or you do not want to go on a golfing trip for work then just say no. People waste countless hours of their lives because they are afraid to say no to an invitation. The best way to do this is to thank the person for the invitation and say that you have prior commitments.
